The material of automobile drive shaft should be medium carbon steel as far as possible

1. Low carbon steel has good plasticity, low strength and hardness, good weldability and cold stamping process, and can be used to make all kinds of standard parts, bushings, containers, etc.;

2. High carbon steel has poor plasticity, high hardness, poor fatigue strength, poor cutting machinability, and is not tough enough to make shaft parts and easy to break. This type of steel is suitable for the production of static pressure type, wear resistance parts, such as heavy rail, roll. After appropriate heat treatment can also be produced spring, wire rope and so on need high hardness, high wear resistance parts;

3. The main role of the automobile drive shaft is to support the rotating body and transfer power. The working conditions are generally subjected to alternating torque and tension and compression load, and the shaft journal and key parts are subjected to greater friction and wear. The failure modes are mainly fracture and local excessive wear, including fatigue fracture and overload fracture.

Therefore, the material should have enough strength, stiffness and certain toughness, good wear resistance, high fatigue strength and good cutting machinability. That is, the spindle is required to have good comprehensive mechanical properties.

4. The medium carbon steel after appropriate heat treatment (quenching and tempering, surface hardening, carburizing, etc.) can obtain good comprehensive mechanical properties, to the core toughness, surface wear-resistant parts.

It is recommended to choose alloy quenching and tempering steel (belonging to the category of medium carbon steel) as far as possible. Generally, quenching and tempering steel has poor hardenability and low mechanical properties, so it is only suitable for parts with small size and light load. The alloying elements in the alloy modulated steel can improve the hardenability, enhance the hardening surface effect of the heat treatment, and do not reduce the core toughness. Alloy quenched and tempered steel after heat treatment (quenching and quenching) has high strength, high wear resistance and good plastic toughness, that is, has a good comprehensive mechanical properties.
